Waste Disposal Project in al-Rastan
In the embattled and besieged Rastan, Homs governorate, disruption of solid waste disposal and collection became a significant crisis; over 100 tons of waste are laid in the city streets every day. At better times, al-Rastan people used to collect and dispose waste to the eastern landfill, around 10 kilometers far from the city center. However, security threats have restricted access to the area.
The city, laid to waste after several years of clashing, had its waste containers and cars destroyed, leaving chunks of waste not lifted from streets and residential areas. With no hygienic measures taken to dispose the waste or contaminate the resulting pollution, the situation sets out our humanitarian responsibilities towards the afflicted population.
Project Objectives:
– Waste disposal to outside al-Rastan city.
– Safe and hygienic transportation of waste to a new landfill that lies far from residential areas.
– Resolution of the waste crisis and combating the spread of disease and epidemics in the targeted city.
– Contribution to environment protection and spreading awareness among the city residents.
– Provision of public hygiene services.
– Alleviation of women, children, and elders’ suffering from pollution and diseases.
– Promotion of a safe and clean environment.
