“Urgent Relief” to the Afflicted Families in Eastern Ghouta

Dire Conditions

As other areas inside Syria, Eastern Ghouta has endured dire humanitarian conditions triggered by the ongoing war that began in 2011. The situation was recently exacerbated by arbitrary bombardment and heated fights that led to disastrous consequences along with a five-year siege. Desperate villagers flooded to underground bunkers and shelters that narrowly allowed for human survival. For over three weeks, they were trapped in unprepared and hygienically unsafe shelters. Hungry and fearful as they were, the situation called for urgent intervention to support this area. Our organization “Beyaz Eller” has stepped in and worked on alleviating this heinous humanitarian suffering.

Our project and its results

With Support from “Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Society”, “Beyaz Eller Organization” worked on undertaking an “Urgent Relief” project for the afflicted households in Eastern Ghouta. First, our focus was to deliver bread. We successfully distributed 11,700 bread bags to the neediest households who survived unventilated shelters for three weeks. The total number of beneficiaries was 8,340 Syrians.

An insane suffering

In one of the distribution rounds, we met a local executive volunteer whose charitable sentiments have fostered a four-year activism in this sector. He joined our distribution teams to deliver assistance to the afflicted, the needy, and the wounded.

He says:

One of the benefiters is a lady in her 30….

“Literally speaking, I hold my soul in my hand as I come over to receive the assistance which I am supposed to distribute. Threats surround us everywhere. We owe survival to Allah who facilitates our work and keeps us safe.”Adding:“Amid a stifled siege, cries of hungry children motivate my efforts to overcome all difficulties and threats and to help them survive.”

She looks after her mother after her father has passed away, and works as a home-based teacher after closure of her school following several air strikes.. She says: “The humanitarian situation is horrific; all sources of livelihood are blocked up. Yet, we struggle to brave all difficulties and pains. Food assistance is so little compared to our large number. It is given first to children and elders.” When asked about education, she replied: “Surely schools are closed. Some were destroyed by arbitrary raids. But many educators have not forgotten their duty; they launch small home-based classes so that children won’t grow up ignorant.”

And yet, our aim is to help everyone in need

As humanitarian needs continue to grow amid a ceaseless conflict, our aim is to increase relief and service projects to help the afflicted communities overcome misery and hardship.
