Bread Distribution in Eastern Ghouta, Supported by Shabab Al Khayr

Volunteering Team

“Under a five-year siege and arbitrary bombardment of residential buildings and vital facilities, Eastern Ghouta has endured enormous difficulties in importing food supplies to the afflicted residents. Along with food scarcity, the increased prices have challenged families’ ability to afford healthy and proper nutrition on daily basis.”

Implementation Method

As measures to alleviate the financial and psychological burden of the besieged households in Eastern Ghouta, “Beyaz Eller Organization” has collaborated with “Abdullah Al Nouri Charity Society”– Shabab Al Khayr Volunteering Team, to prepare and distribute bread bundles to the besieged families in underground shelters and bunkers. Our team identified areas of extreme food needs as part of its regular need assessment operations.

The project was executed via three separate contracts. We distributed 2,925 bread bundles to 2,085 beneficiaries. The total quantity of distributed bread is 8,775 bundles delivered to 6,255 benefiters.

Siege and Suffering

A Man an elderly over 60 years of age, whose rumpled face indicates the suffering of siege, tells us:

A Women was soothing her girl as she explains the reason behind her screams:

“We stayed in shelters for nearly ten consecutive days unable to get out for even a second. The shelling was intense; had anyone got out, he would have certainly died. The shelters were not ready for accommodation. Without food or water, we survived on bread and meals that few youth have imperiled their lives to bring to us. Priority was given to the children who received food first.”

“Everyday she awakes screaming and calling on her brother whom we lost to the violence. When the shelling intensified, we ran to the closest shelter…I was holding him in my hands but suddenly I could not find him. I looked for him everywhere but we still do not know what happened to him.”

A girl in her twenty, provides treatment to patients and the wounded..

“This place lacks even the simplest necessities; as you see, no medicine to relieve their pain or food to nurture their starving bodies…they need food to recover. Food scarcity has affected their immunity. Their bodies are vulnerable to disease and infection, especially when large numbers crowd in a hygienically improper place. Water scarcity escalates the spread of diseases. Now people are scared of epidemics.”

A lasting support

Towards the continued current of suffering, our teams inside Syria will strive to support the afflicted communities wherever there are, and will keep providing every possible assistance and service that enable them overcoming this hardship.
