Beyaz Eller distributed flour in northern rural Ruston between 3, June and 4, July of 2016. Supported by Qatar Charity Association, the project took place after imposing a strangled siege on the city. Food supplies became scarce and prices of basic items, particularly flour, increased dramatically, depriving thousands of families of basic food sources.
The project was based on buying 106 tons of flour, 424 tons of yeast and 2,210 kilograms of salt. In addition, the institution provided mazut, wages, salaries, and packaging materials to pack and distribute free bread to 2,030 families- two packs per family.
Over 3.7 tons of bread were baked every day. This was equivalent to 34,040 loaves or 4,255 packs that reached 2,127 families throughout a month period.
The total number of produced loaves was 1,021,200, while the number of beneficiaries reached 12,762 individuals.
“Al Ruston” flour project alleviated besieged families’ misery, offered free bread, worked out local bakeries and resolved the bread crisis in the city. Moreover, it prevented crisis profiteers from benefiting of people’s hunger by raising prices to non-affordable levels.
