The phenomenal increase in food prices, particularly flour, challenged limited finances and deprived many Syrian families of plain bread. Therefore, Beyaz Eller called for a project to support secured zones with flour, for the following reasons: – First, the unprecedented increase in bread prices along with diminishing purchasing ability.
– Second, the increase in number of displaced families moving to northern areas. As a result, increased demand surpassed production and pushed price higher.
In response, Beyaz Eller, supported by Qatar Charity, started distributing 186 tons of flour to local bakeries that, in turn, produce and offer free bread to afflicted and financially disabled families. In continuation of this effort, the institution distributes 46.5 tons every month to three bakeries: Kafr Naha in rural Aleppo, Al-Neyrab bakery in Idlib and Al-latamna bakery in rural Hama.
The project aims at: – Providing flour and encouraging local bakeries to work at full capacity;
– Distributing bread and channeling aid to all societal groups that suffer dire economic and humanitarian situation;
– Resolving bread crisis and avoiding a humanitarian catastrophe;
– Loosening traders’ control over local prices;
– Distributing 223,200 bundles on afflicted families;
– Distributing 1,700,000 loafs;
– Benefiting 200,000 individuals throughout a four-months period; and
– Securing bread free of charge to the needy and impoverished Syrians.
In previous years, Beyaz Eller has successfully executed over 100 relief projects inside and outside Syria. Between 2013 and 2014, over 1,400 tons of flour were distributed to several regions. In late 2014, the institution distributed 500 tons of flour to Al Ruston city, a project that benefited more than 60,000 individuals in the city.
Also, local bakeries in northern Syria received 336 tons of flour. All of these projects where supported by Qatar Charity’s generous donations that benefited over 268,800 afflicted families.
This project aims at alleviating the suffering of displaced and afflicted Syrians by granting them free bread.
