Beyaz Eller Maintains Al-Ruston Sewerage
For seven years, Syrian cities and villages have been subject to intensive shelling that destroyed the country’s public infrastructure, including water, electricity, and sewage facilities which are central to protecting public health and combating the spread of epidemics.
According to UNICEF reports, the situation alarms about the spread of disease among vulnerable children due to the serious damages inflicted upon water and sewerage pipelines. Reports show that sewage treatment processes has decreased from 70 per cent before the crisis to 35 per cent. Similarly, garbage collection and treatment has diminished, altogether calling attention to a serious hygiene crisis in the country.
To help improving the situation, Beyaz Eller has worked on maintaining Al-Ruston sewerage pipeline. Extending to 180 meters, one third of the pipelines has been renewed. A total 110 households has benefited from the project, including 564 individuals in the afflicted city.
The project aimed at easing the crisis resulting from destruction of the sewerage system, combating diseases, and preventing an eminent hygiene crisis in the afflicted neighborhoods.
Note withstanding, the project offered a number of job opportunities to the desperate local workforce.
