Urgent Relief to the Besieged in Eastern Ghouta

Project Justification

The indifferential striking and destruction of Eastern Ghouta has affected all aspects of human life. Villages and cities suffer from poverty and unemployment, and despair flies in the air as people endure a five-year siege that deprives them from their most important human right– safety. The oppression and the feeling that death chases everyone exacerbates the humanitarian misery; people with chronic illnesses suffer more with food shortage, closure of bakeries, and destruction of food warehouses, all besides a sudden increase in food prices to unaffordable levels.

The Financing Partner

Beyaz Eller, in cooperation with Qatar Charity, has worked on implementing two projects to distribute cooked meals and food baskets to the besieged households, as measures to easen the crisis in Eastern Ghouta. The projects aimed at distributing some food items to feed the starving children and help their weak bodies restore healthiness amid dire financial and humanitarian conditions. A report by the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SOHR) asserted that 427 residents have died of hunger, including 221 children.

Where the Project is Active?

The project is active in Eastern Ghouta–Damascus countryside. Our field team has overcome all access difficulties and succeeded to deliver cooked meals and food baskets to the afflicted families.

Beneficiaries from this Project

The effect of severe food shortage has been terrible for pregnant and lactating mothers and their babies who suffer from severe malnutrition. The situation of toddlers and young children is no different, since the majority suffers from food shortage and lack of necessary nutrition supplements.

The project centres around the idea of sufficing the targeted families’ food need throughout a month duration. To the moment, we distributed 600 baskets, 9,325 cooked meals, and 6,000 bread bundles. The number of beneficiaries is 15,925 families, equivalent to 79,625 individuals.

In addition, the campaign offered job opportunities to 185 individuals who served in bakeries, kitchens, and loading and distributing food.
