A renewed misery moves from one place to another. Oppression prevails and death parades across the country. Children die in the wrongful shelling. Elders allay their pain with tears. Women cry silently the loss of father, son, brother, and husband. And the youth’s only crime was to dream of a better future, a future that refused to come.
The war has destroyed cities and people, and drained the county’s human and natural resources. However, Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside, and Saraqeb, and Maárat al-Nu’man in Idlib had a greater share of the ongoing ruination. Despite long distances, suffering has united the three heavily afflicted areas.
A relentless shelling that left people running out of food and medicines as they endure cold winter storms in the open.
In Eastern Ghouta, Damascus countryside, around 390,000 civilians have sustained a five-year siege in which ongoing shelling has destroyed vital installations, civil facilities, and residential areas, reflecting the intent of complete devastation.
The ‘Syrian Network for Human Rights’ reports the death of 370 civilians, including 63 children and 72 women, since January 2018.
Meanwhile, a recent report by the ‘Syrian Observatory for Human Rights’ asserts that the number of victims is subject to significant increase; many of the wounded are in critical condition, and many others are lost under ruins caused by the aerial shelling of Eastern Ghouta.
A recent report by the ‘Syrian Observatory for Human Rights’ assured the launching of a new series of aerial attacks on Idlib countryside that continued to 8 February morning.
Also, the ‘Syrian Network for Human Rights’ has documented 658 civilian causalities (211 dead and 447 injured) in January 2018. In eleven days, 103 civilians were killed, including 10 women and 33 children. Shelling has targeted medical points and field hospitals which increased the number of causalities and denied safe exit to the critical cases who needed specialized treatment in hospitals.
Meanwhile, the UN estimate that 272,000 individuals have escaped the intensified assault on Idlib.
The numbers, shocking as they are, reflect but part of the brutal and unspeakable reality in Syria. An indefinite number of victims lay dead and mangled under rubble; they could not get rescued amid relentless shelling. A massive number of Injured and wounded victims is deprived from medical care in hospitals, since the later have become frequent targets to deliberate aerial strikes. Displaced families are left in the open without food or shelter. Altogether, these facts indicate the true number of victims that supersede reported figures.
Beyaz Eller aims at rescuing and supporting those who are still alive, before they turn to victims.
